Amidst the COVID-19 outbreak, thousands of protesters came out on the streets of Hong Kong to oppose the Chinese government's national security law. The new law will ban all forms of activities against the Chinese government. It will also enable the Chinese army and security agencies to operate in Hong Kong for the first time. The new law will be passed by China next month and will not consult the Hong Kong parliament. The law will have control over politics, education and international business. Anything against the China government will be punished strictly.
The citizens of Hong Kong are against the law because it limits the freedom of the citizens and the city. The protesters had gathered in large groups and were violating the rules of social distancing. An online stream showed protesters throwing objects at police. The police had to use tear gas on the protesters to control them. Hong Kong got independence from the British in 1997. They then became a part of China as a special region, but they were allowed to have their own government and manage their affairs. They have a system called one country two systems.
However, many leaders of Hong Kong believe that this system is not working and want to complete independence from China. They say that the new national security law is another way for China to exert control over HK. Hence the angry protests. During the protests, many were chanting “Hong Kong independence, the only way out,"
