West Bengal: TMC Leader Tajemul Thrashes Couple on Street

The West Bengal police are on the lookout for TMC leader Tajemul after a video of him brutally thrashing a woman and man in public on the streets of Chopra town of West Bengal went viral on social med

A disturbing video of a man thrashing a woman on the road has gone viral on social media. The incident took place in Chopra Town in the Uttar Dinajpur district of West Bengal on 30th June 2024. The video shows the man (assailant) mercilessly beating a woman in a yellow dupatta with a bundle of bamboo sticks repeatedly until she falls unconscious. Then, he proceeds to beat the man kneeling next to the woman in a similar manner. He hits him a few times but is stopped by a woman in a pink dupatta from the crowd. The woman is seen requesting the assailant to leave the man. The assailant leaves the man and turns towards the woman he was thrashing before. She tries to escape but another man from the crowd kicks and pushes her towards the assailant. The assailant then again thrashes the already injured woman. The whole incident takes place surrounded by dozens of people but no one intervenes to stop the assailant or protect the woman. The assailant has been identified as Mamata Banerjee’s Trinamool Congress leader Tajemul, famously known as JCB. Tajemul is also a close associate of Chopra town’s MLA Hamidur Rahaman. According to the reports, the incident occurred during the “Insaf Sabah”. Insaf Sabah is a Taliban-style 'quick justice' forum started by Tajemul himself. He conducts public meetings to address people’s domestic issues like property disputes, divorce, violence etc. and provides “instant justice.” Apparently, the woman in the yellow dupatta is married and is having an intimate extra-marital affair with the man. Publically assaulting them both on the streets was Tajemul’s way of “insaf” and reminding people of the consequences of promiscuity & cheating, especially to women. Tajemul has also fined them both heavily as part of justice and also denied them medical attention after the assault. On 1st July 2024, the West Bengal Police announced that they had registered a case against Tajemul and had also provided police security to the female victim. They have started the investigation by raiding Tajemul’s home, office, and whereabouts to arrest him. BJP West Bengal co-in-charge, Amit Malviya was one of the first people to share the incident and highlight its details. He blamed West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee. He said “This is the ugly face of Mamata Banerjee's rule in West Bengal…India must wake up to the reality of Sharia (Islamic religious) Courts in TMC-run West Bengal. There is a Sandeshkhali in every village (in West Bengal) and Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee is a curse for women…There is no semblance of law and order in Bengal. Will Mamata Banerjee act against this monster or defend him like she stood up for Sheikh Shahjahan?” ISH News link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l3nMZqI-Cuw

Malviya has also urged the National Commission for Women (NCW) to intervene in the case. Union Health Minister and BJP leader J P Nadda also criticized CM Mamata Banerjee for the continuously deteriorating women's safety in West Bengal. He said, “Be it Sandeshkhali, Uttar Dinajpur or many other places, Didi's West Bengal is unsafe for women.” On the other hand, TMC leaders denied the allegations & defended Tajemul. MLA Hamidur Rahman, who is Tajemul’s close associate distanced himself from the incident by saying that it was a village matter and not related to the TMC party. He said “The woman also did wrong. She left her husband, son, and daughter and became an evil beast. There is some code and justice according to Muslim society. However, we do agree that what happened was a bit extreme. Now, legal action will be taken in this case.” TMC district president Kaniyalal Agarwal said that the couple's extra-marital relationship "did not go down well with the villagers" and assured that TMC would investigate the matter.
