What is NeoCov & Is it Dangerous?
World Health Organization (WHO) has said that the question of whether the NeoCov coronavirus poses a threat to humans or not requires further study.
A team of researchers from the Wuhan University and Chinese Academy of Sciences in Beijing have found a new strain of the Coronavirus called the ‘NeoCov’. NeoCov is a close relative (similar) to an old type of Coronavirus called MERS which is Middle East Respiratory Syndrome and has similar symptoms similar to COVID-19. They discovered NeoCov in bats in South Africa and said that it is currently spreading only among animals. The Chinese scientists are very worried as they say that if NeoCov starts spreading among humans that it is much more dangerous than other corona strains. However, there is no proof that NeoCov can spread among humans. Scientists are now doing more research on this virus.
Even the World Health Organisation pointed out that whether NeoCov will pose a risk for humans will require further study. Dr Dhiren Gupta from Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, New Delhi said that “India as of now hasn't seen a case of NeoCov. The coronavirus is continuous;y changing and there are always new strains coming up. The government is keeping a close watch on this.” He also said that on social media there is a lot of news saying if 3 people get infected with NeoCov one will surely die. However, there is no proof of this and scientists are still researching. There is no need to panic.
