In the devastating second wave of infections, Assam has lost over 872 lives in May alone, of which 296 were in Guwahati. Ronita Krishna Sharma Rekhi works in Mumbai as a celebrity and production manager. She is from Guwahati, Assam and currently resides there. Ronita has a two-month-old girl. She has volunteered to breastfeed newborns in Guwahati who have lost their mothers to coronavirus or those who can't feed the child as they are in isolation due to the disease. On 4th May Ronita tweeted, "Only for Guwahati as I live here. If any newborn needs breast milk I'm here to help.” Ronita has been amplifying her message on various social media platforms while taking care of her own child. According to medical research, a mother lactates for six months after the birth of her child. Also if the mother has only 1 child then the milk production is surplus to her own child's requirement.
When asked about the inspiration behind the move, Ronita said she saw a social media appeal for mother's milk for a Delhi-based woman. This woman was in isolation after being infected with Covid. Ronita said this made her think that a similar need may arise for someone in Guwahati. Ronita credited her husband, Mohsin Rekhi, for supporting the initiative. She has also urged other lactating mothers to join the cause.
